Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Steve Maye spent 9 seasons in the minor leagues and, despite having multiple solid seasons, never advanced above High-A. He played from 1984 to 1991 and again in 1994.

He was originally taken by the Seattle Mariners in the 4th round of the regular phase of the 1984 January draft, but he opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken in the 1st round, 14th overall, by the Chicago Cubs in the secondary phase of the 1984 June draft; he was selected a couple picks after pitcher Eric Hetzel.

He was 7-2 with a 2.90 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) for the Pikeville Cubs his first season, averaging 9.3 K/9 IP. In 1988, now in the Oakland Athletics system, he went 2-1 with 7 saves and a 1.68 ERA in 32 relief appearances. In 1990, with the Salinas Spurs, he won 10 games and completed 14 of his 27 starts, but he was a 25-year-old pitching at High-A, 2.3 years older than the average league player. In his final campaign, 1994, the 29-year-old was again at High-A (6.2 years older than the average player). In 132 innings, he went 4-5 with 4 saves and a 3.41 ERA.
