Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Steve Johnson was taken by the San Diego Padres in the 3rd round of the 1979 amateur draft, a couple picks after pitcher Chuck Crim and a couple ahead of second baseman Nick Capra. He played in their system through 1984, then joined the Toronto Blue Jays organization in 1985. He peaked at Double A.

Not a power hitter -- his career slugging percentage was .350 -- Johnson did have good speed, stealing 31, 46, 23 and 23 bases from 1981 to 1984, respectively. He hit .237 for his career, with a full-season high of .259 with the Reno Padres in 1982.

Johnson stole 211 bases in his career and had 529 hits in 672 games over seven seasons.
