Biographical Information

Steve Fanning was a shortstop drafted in the 7th round of the 1988 Amateur Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals (184th overall).

He started his professional career with the Hamilton Redbirds in the New York-Pennsylvania League. He saw action in 60 games hitting just .223 with 8 doubles. His performance in the field was dismal. He commited 37 errors at shortstop for an .874 fielding percentage.

In 1989, he moved on to the Savannah Cardinals in the South Atlantic League. He improved to .265 with 13 doubles, 2 triples, and 5 home runs. The young shortstop also improved his fielding slightly to .897.

During the next campaign, he played for the Double-A Arkansas Travelers. He hit just .225 with 23 doubles, 4 triples, and 4 home runs. He was moved over to second base in the field and had a .966 fielding percentage.

Fanning split his time between Arkansas and St. Petersburg in 1991. He hit .231 with 14 doubles, a triple, and 3 home runs. Playing third and second, Steve commited 22 errors in 366 chances.

1992 was spent with St. Petersburg, Arkansas, and Triple-A Louisville. His batting average fell as he hit just .211 on the season. In 78 games, he hit 6 doubles, 2 triples, and 2 homers. Steve spent most of his time in the field back at shortstop.

Fanning spent the entire 1993 campaign with the Arkansas Travelers where he hit .213. His .974 fielding percentage at shortstop was a vast improvement over his early years at that position.

The Cardinals gave Steve another shot at Triple-A in 1994. In 65 games with Louisville, Fanning hit .246 with 3 doubles. Dividing his time between second, third, and short with one appearance in the outfield, he made just 1 error on the campaign.

Fanning turned up in the Cubs farm system in 1995. In 4 games for Iowa, Steve failed to get a hit and drew just one walk in 6 plate appearances.

Steve left baseball and now works as an eletronics salesman in Los Angeles, CA.

Family

Fanning's wife, Joy Arrington, was an accomplished collegiate tennis player and had a brief professional career. His wife's father is Rick Arrington who was a quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles football team from 1970 to 1972. Joy's sister, Tiffany, worked as a reporter for ESPN under the name Jill Arrington.

Steve and Joy have two daughters, Dakota and Elle, who are both internationally renowned film actresses. 18-year old Dakota is one of the most popular young actresses in Hollywood and has starred in such films as The Secret Life of Bees, Charlotte's Web, Dreamer, War of the Worlds, I Am Sam, Man on Fire, and The Twilight Saga. 14-year old Elle has appeared in many films including Super 8 and We Bought A Zoo.
