Biographical information[edit]

Stephen Sloboda was a minor league player and manager. He played from 1939 to 1945 and from 1948 to 1950, and he managed for parts of 1949 and 1950.

Sloboda played for the Staunton Presidents (1939-41, 1942), Salem-Roanoke Friends (1941, 1942), Wilmington Blue Rocks (1942-43), Utica Braves (1943), Williamsport Grays (1944), Hagerstown Owls (1945), Little Rock Travelers (1945), Binghamton Triplets (1945), Goldsboro Goldbugs (1948), Pine Bluff Cardinals (1948), Galax Leafs (1949) and Radford Rockets (1949).

In 1,121 minor league games, Sloboda hit .274 with 1,099 hits, 197 doubles, 43 triples and 37 home runs. Perhaps his best season was his first - in 97 games, he hit .349 with 21 doubles, 10 triples and two home runs. The following year, he hit a career-high 10 home runs and 14 triples.

He managed the Galax Leafs for the first part of the 1949 season, being replaced eventually by Bob Latshaw. In 1950, he managed the Radford Rockets after replacing Garland Braxton. He led the team to the league playoffs with a record of only 52-70.
