Biographical Information

Garland Braxton was the 1928 American League ERA champ with the Washington Senators, crafting a fine 13-11, 2.51 mark in 38 games with career bests in starts (24), complete games (15, more than half of his career total of 28), and innings pitched (218 1/3). One year prior, he was the Sens trusted reliever in his first year on the club, leading the American League in appearances (58) and games finished (31) with a 10-9, 2.95 record. He is also recognized, retroactively, as the AL saves champion in '27, tied with Wilcy Moore of the "Murderer's Row" Yankees, with 13. Braxton regressed in the final year of his Senators tenure, 1929 (12-10, 4.85), and resumed his journeyman ways through 1933. In a ten year major league career, he was 50-53 with a 4.13 ERA and 29 saves.

Garland pitched long enough to accumulate 3,103 innings in the minor leagues between 1920 and 1949. In the minors, he had a 200-161 record with a 3.25 ERA in 577 games. He was the 1925 Eastern League victory leader, tallying 24, and led the 1944 Piedmont League with a sparkling 0.74 ERA. He moved around rather less in the minors than many players who had long careers. He pitched six years for Milwaukee and six for Norfolk, along with two each for Springfield, Little Rock and Winston-Salem, among other stops. He pitched into his late 40s, although as a player-manager he had the advantage of putting himself on the roster. Braxton also managed the 1944-1945 Norfolk Tars, 1946 Binghamton Triplets, 1949 Lawrenceville Robins and 1949-1950 Radford Rockets.

Braxton was born in 1900 in Snow Camp, NC, one of three major leaguers born there through 2019.
