Biographical Information[edit]
Spider Wilhelm, one of five major leaguers with that last name, played 7 games for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1953. A shortstop who went 2 for 7 in the majors, he came up to a team whose regular shortstop was Joe DeMaestri. Eddie Joost also played 51 games at the position that year.
He appeared for the Carta Vieja of Panama in the 1954 Caribbean Series.
His obituary in the Baltimore Sun said that he was nicknamed Spider because of the sure way he covered shortstop. He attended Clifton Park Junior High School. He spent some time in the Army at Fort Meade.
