Biographical Information

Slim Love pitched six years in the major leagues, mostly with the New York Yankees from 1916 to 1918. He never had a losing season, going 28-21 overall. He had an ERA of 2.35 in 1916, and then in 1917 won 13 games, second-highest total on the Yankee team.

Traded to the Detroit Tigers, in 1919 he had an ERA lower than most of the starters, although he was used more often as a reliever than a starter. He went 6-4 with one save on a team that went 80-60.

In 1914 and 1915 he had led the Pacific Coast League in ERA.

He played for the Washington Senators in 1913, the Yankees from 1916 to 1918 and was traded to the Boston Red Sox right before Babe Ruth was traded to the Yankees. Slim only spent four months in Boston with Ruth before being traded to the Detroit Tigers where he played with the likes of Ty Cobb. He continued to pitch in the minor leagues through 1930, 7 times winning in double digits from 1922-1930, including 21 in 1926. He spent six years from 1922-1930 in the Texas League.

After baseball, one source says that he worked as a steamfitter at a Navy shipyard. He died at age 52 when hit by a car.
