Biographical Information

Slick Castleman pitched six years for the New York Giants, with two seasons of note. In 1935, he was 15-6 with a 4.09 ERA in 29 games, missing some time after breaking his hand during batting practice. In 1937, he was 11-6 with a 3.37 ERA in 23 games. He made a brief appearance in the 1936 World Series, allowing just an earned run in 4 1/3 innings to briefly cool the New York Yankees' heels in a 13-5 blowout in Game 6. Castleman made his last big league appearance on the 4th of July in 1939, kicking around as property of the Giants until 1942.

Slick is said to have gotten his nickname because he was a slick dresser. He is one of only two major leaguers remembered with that first name, along with Slick Coffman, his contemporary and also a pitcher. This Slick was referred to at least as often by his real name, Clydell, as he was by his nickname.
