Biographical Information

Silvano Ambrosioni was a longtime manager of the Italian national team.

Ambrosioni was a 1B-OF from 1965-1970, hitting .221/.373/.249 with 31 steals in 40 tries and 56 walks in 98 games at Italy's top level for Milano. He then went into coaching, first with Milano.

He guided the Italian national team to Gold in the 1977 European Championship, their first Gold in a European Championship held in the Netherlands, the top Italian rival. He managed Italy in the 1978 Amateur World Series and from 1985-2000, including in the 1992 Olympics, 1996 Olympics and 2000 Olympics and three more European Championship Gold Medals. He also managed Italy to fourth place at the 1998 Baseball World Cup, the closest they have come (as of 2010) to win a Medal in a major global tournament. He was named IBAF Coach of the Year in 1998.

From 2003 until his death the next year, Ambrosioni was Technical Commissioner of the IBAF.

His nephew Alessandro Ambrosioni also played in Italy's top loop.

Ambrosioni was elected to the Italian Baseball Hall of Fame as part of their inaugural class of 2005.
