Biographical Information[edit]

Shiroku Ishido pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years.

Ishido was signed by the Kokutetsu Swallows in 1962, and he spent his first three seasons primarily in the NPB Farm Leagues, only pitching 17 games combined with the big club. He entered the rotation in 1965, and he was 8-18 with a 3.05 ERA in 53 appearances. He was 2nd in losses in the Central League (4 behind Seiji Shibutani) and 4th in appearances (tied with Shibutani). He then had a 11-17 record with a 3.17 ERA in 50 appearances in 1966, and he was 5th in games pitched (between Kenichi Ryu and Susumu Oba). He started a league-leading 36 games in 1967, but he also led the league in losses, hits allowed and runs allowed. He was 12-18 with a 3.73 ERA in this season, ranking 9th in wins (tied with Yutaka Enatsu, Shigeyuki Takahashi, and Tsuneo Horiuchi) and 4th in innings (between Chikara Morinaka and Enatsu).

The Akita native had his career year in 1968, and he was selected into the 1968 NPB All-Star Game. He relieved Masaichi Kaneda in the 9th inning of Game 2, and he fanned 2 while allowed 2 runs (all unearned runs due to Yukinobu Kuroe's error). Ishido ended up 20-14 with a 2.84 ERA, ranking 4th in wins (between Yoshiro Sotokoba and Horiuchi), 8th in ERA (between Minoru Murayama and Tatsumi Yamanaka) and 3rd in appearances (between Sohachi Aniya and Masaji Hiramatsu). He attended the 1969 NPB All-Star Game, but he only retired Hiroyuki Yamazaki while allowing 4 runs. He ended up 16-13 with a 3.48 ERA, and he was 3rd in wins (between Kentaro Ogawa and Ritsuo Yamashita). However, Ishido slumped to 3-15 with a 4.60 ERA in 1970, and he was 3rd in losses (4 behind Hiramatsu). He announced his retirement after the 1970 season due to cirrhosis.

Overall, Ishido was 70-90 with a 3.44 ERA, struck out 516 and pitched 1,319 2/3 innings in 9 years in NPB.
