Tani represented Japan in the 1981 Intercontinental Cup and was named the event's All-Star third baseman. The Kintetsu Buffaloes drafted him in the second round of the 1982 NPB draft. Tani was named the starting shortstop for the Buffaloes as a rookie, and he hit .232/.309/.307 in 119 games in 1983. Tani slumped to .167/.245/.222 in the next season, and Tokuichi Fukiishi took his spot. He blasted the 1,000th grand slam in NPB history on July 4. When Takayuki Murakami shined and secured the starting spot in 1985, Tani was promoted to the NPB Farm Leagues, and he only played 91 more games combined in the next four seasons. He announced his retirement after the 1990 season, and coached the Buffaloes from 1991 to 1996. He was also a scout for the Buffaloes from 1997 to 2002.

Overall, Tani had hit .208/.281/.272 in 6 seasons in NPB.
