Biographical Information[edit]

Shigeki Oto played in Nippon Pro Baseball.

Oto was drafted by the Chunichi Dragons in the fifth round of the 1987 NPB draft.[1] He debuted on April 8, 1988, and collected his first hit with the big club from Takashi Nishimoto on April 16. He spent the first three years of his career in the NPB Farm Leagues, only playing 154 games combined with the top team. The Dragons then traded Oto with Kazutoshi Yamada to the Hiroshima Toyo Carp for Kiyoyuki Nagashima after the 1990 season.[2]

The Carp still used Oto as pinch-hitter or the 4th outfielder, so he was limited to 61 and 85 games played in 1991 and 1992. He was demoted to the ni-gun in 1993, and he only played 12 games with the big club. The Ishikawa native finally broke out in 1994, as he recorded a .294/.342/.405 batting line with 5 homers. When Tomonori Maeda was injured in 1995, Oto replaced him, hit .267/.314/.381 with 9 homers, and won the only NPB Gold Glove in his career.

The Carp traded Oto back to the Dragons for Takanobu Wakabayashi after the 1995 season. He hit .265/.322/.433 in the 1996 season before being injured in July. He slumped to .162/.213/.223 after he came back in 1997, and Takeshi Aikoh replaced him on the outfield. Oto then announced his retirement after hitting .203/.280/.257 in the 1999 season. He was the defense coach for the Dragons' minor team in 2002, then served as the same position for the Dragons from 2003 to 2008. He is a scout for the Dragons now (2023).

Overall, Oto had hit .251/.303/.364 in 12 seasons in NPB.
