Sherman Institute
The Sherman Institute was a Federally-run educational institution located in Riverside, CA, whose purpose was to provide quality higher education for members of Indian tribes in southern California. It was a boarding school that provided both high school and vocational classes, along the lines of the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. It opened in 1903 and was named after California Representative (later Vice-President) James S. Sherman. It became the Sherman Indian High School in 1971.
Sherman's baseball team was quite a strong one in the 1900s and 1910s as they competed evenly with some of the larger colleges in California.
