Biographical Information[edit]
Sherman Cottingham was primarily a pitcher for the Kansas City Monarchs in the final two years of the Negro American League, 1961 and 1962, being the winning pitcher in its last East-West Game, and played for the independent barnstorming Monarchs team later, occasionally being billed as "Satchel Paige Jr."
Before joining the Monarchs, Cottingham attended Grambling State University, playing varsity basketball, and graduating in 1959.
After leaving the Monarchs, Cottingham attended Northeast Louisiana University (now named University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM), gaining his masters degree in 1968, and became a schoolteacher.
