After World War II, baseball returned to Shelby, NC with the Shelby Cubs, who played in 1946 only in the Tri-State League. They tied for fourth (59-81) with the Anderson A's, edging Anderson in the tiebreaker to make the playoffs, where they fell 4 games to 2 to the Charlotte Hornets. Shelby was outscored 688-649, second in the league in runs scored and 4th in fewest runs allowed among the six teams. Future major leaguers included OF Carmen Mauro (.267/~.354/.381, 16 SB), OF Hal Jeffcoat (.294/~.333/.448, a league-high 15 homers, a league-leading 26 outfield assists, 6 double plays and 21 errors) and C Rube Novotney (.299/~.354/.435, a league-leading 15 triples).
