Sergio Mena debuted with the Nicaraguan national team in the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games, was 0 for 3 in the 2005 Baseball World Cup (backing up Marlon Abea at catcher) and was a late scratch for the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games (Larry Galeano replaced him). In the 2007 Pan American Games, Mena was 2 for 12 as Nicaragua's starting catcher. He was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI as the backup to Abea in the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup.
