Sergio Espinosa had a 18-15 record with 17 saves and a 3.57 ERA in 102 career games and 3 seasons through 2006-2007 in the Cuban Serie Nacional. He was 5-6 with 14 saves and a 2.73 ERA for the Isla de la Juventud Pine Cutters in 2007-2008. That year, he allowed a .220 average and struck out 88 in 92 1/3 IP. He finished among the league leaders in saves (1st), games (35, 6th), strikeouts (4th) and ERA (tied for 6th with Yadier Pedroso). He was named the All-Star relief pitcher.
Espinosa left Cuba after 2008. In 2009, he was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball. He wound up signing with the Tampa Bay Rays and made his pro debut on May 22, 2010, with the Charlotte Stone Crabs. He had allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on eight hits after six innings in the US.
