Schottzie

From BR Bullpen

Schottzie was a large St. Bernard dog who was the pet of owner Marge Schott and served as an unofficial mascot of the Cincinnati Reds from the time she bought the club in 1984 until he was put to sleep on August 7, 1991 due to advanced age and various ailments. He was buried at her home, wearing a Reds cap. He was then replaced by another dog bearing the same name.

It's hard to estimate Schottzie's true popularity, given how closely he was linked to the controversial owner, who would not breach the slightest criticism of her pet, even if he was fouling the grounds at Riverfront Stadium, most notoriously during the on-field celebrations after the Reds had won the 1990 World Series. For example, in an interview he gave long after he retired, former Reds minor leaguer Brad Tweedlie recalled that one of the weirdest moments of his career came in spring training in 1994, when Ms. Schott rounded up a group of Reds minor leaguers who were asked to sing "Happy Birthday" for the pet (by then it was the successor to the original). Managers and coaches who insufficiently gushed over the cuteness of the dog were said to be inviting trouble.
