Santiago Gutiérrez has pitched for 14 seasons entering 2019. He has played in the US, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and Mexico.
He debuted in 2005 with the Chicago White Sox' Bristol White Sox affiliate (1-0, 4.50 in 13 G). In 2006, he allowed 2 runs (one earned) in 3 1/3 IP for the VSL Orioles/White Sox. The next year, his last in the Pale Hose chain, he was 1-4 with 5 saves and a 4.56 ERA for the DSL White Sox 2. That winter, he debuted in Mexico with the Yaquis de Obregón (0 R in 2 IP though 4 H, 2 BB).
The lefty made his Mexican League debut with the 2008 Leones de Yucatán, going 0-1 with a 5.11 ERA. After not pitching in the winter of 2008-2009 or the summer of 2009, he was back in action as a LOOGY in the winter of 2009-2010, going 1-0 for the Águilas de Mexicali with a 9.95 ERA and 2.61 WHIP in 20 games (12 2/3 IP). He was 0-1 with two saves and a 2.75 ERA for the 2010 Leones. He had a save and a 2.09 ERA for Mexicali in 2010-2011, showing great strides over the prior winter.
For Yucatán in 2011, he was 4-4 with two saves and a 4.68 ERA. He was 1-0 with a 3.15 ERA in the winter for Mexicali. In the summer of '12, he was 2-2 with two saves and a 4.86 ERA in 39 outings, then he struggled in the winter (0-1, 7.78 in 7 G). He split 2013 between Yucatán (1-0, 5.14 in 21 G) and the Saraperos de Saltillo (0-2, 8.27 in 27 G). In the winter, he again pitched 7 games for Mexicali (1-1, 3.38).
In 2014, he was 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA, working primarily as a starting pitcher for Saltillo. He walked 64 in 96 1/3 IP. He easily led the LMB in walks, 13 more than the runner-up. That winter, he switched clubs, going to the Cañeros de Los Mochis and posting a 2-5, 4.43 record. He tied for 7th in the Mexican Pacific League in losses. In '15, he was 8-7 with a 4.16 ERA for Saltillo, cutting his walks to 41 while pitching more innings (125 1/3 IP). He tied Pablo Ortega for 9th in the LMB in innings. He saw limited action that winter for Los Mochis (1.80 ERA in 11 G).
Gutiérrez slumped to 3-6, 5.21 for the 2016 Saraperos; that winter, he was 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA in 35 games for the Cañeros, 9th in the LMP in appearances. He was hit hard for the 2017 Saraperos (2-9, 7.26 ERA, 1.74 WHIP). He tied for 4th in the league in losses. With Los Mochis, he had a fine winter (4-1, 2.53 in 40 G). He tied Edgar Gomez for the most games pitched in the circuit.
The LMB switched to a two-season format for 2018. In the spring season, he was 1-2 with a 5.34 ERA in 35 games for Saltillo, in their bullpen again after several years as a summer starter. Only Roman Pena pitched more games in that campaign. In the fall, he was 3-0 with a 2.48 ERA in 29 games for the Saraperos, tied for 10th in appearances. He had a 2-2, 4.53 record that winter for Los Mochis.
The veteran southpaw was a late addition to the Mexican national team for the 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier. He pitched one game, relieving Gerardo Sánchez with two outs in the 7th and a 3-2 lead over the Dominican national team. He worked 1 1/3 shutout innings, fanning one, before Esteban Haro closed it out. Mexico did not advance to the 2019 Pan American Games.
