Biographical Information[edit]

Sang-hoon Kim has been the starting catcher for the KIA Tigers for almost a decade.

Kim was 1 for 3 for the South Korean national team in the 1998 Baseball World Cup, backing up Won-wook Chung at DH. He played for South Korea in the 1999 Asian Championship. He debuted in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2000 with the Tigers, then the Haitai Tigers, and hit .234/~.269/.326 with 52 strikeouts in 184 AB. In 2001, he hit .260/~.312/.336 for the Tigers. He hit .391/.500/.478 as the starting backstop for South Korea at the 2001 Baseball World Cup.

Kim batted only .221/.268/.314 for the 2002 Tigers. He played for South Korea in the 2002 Asian Games, going 5 for 10 with 4 RBI for the Gold Medalists, backing up Sung-heon Hong; all four RBI and four of the hits came against the Philippines. He rebounded in 2003 to hit .279/~.331/.388. In 2004, his batting line was .262/~.322/.378. He hit .235/~.301/.342 in the 2005 season and .234/~.296/.297 in 2006.

In 2007, the Korea University alumnus hit .263/~.320/.344. He only played 35 games for KIA in 2008, batting .267/~.315/.372. Back as a starter by 2009, he hit .230/.316/.361. He still won a Gold Glove as the best overall catcher in the league that year.
