Biographical Information

Sandy Patrone has pitched 7 years in Italy through 2007 and 5 years for the Italian national team. He is the cousin of former minor leaguer and Italian national team player Carlos Patrone.

Sandy Patrone debuted in Serie A1 when he was only 18 years old, going 0-1 with a save and a 5.80 ERA. He did not pitch in Serie A1 in 2002 (working with Riccione in A2) but returned in 2003 with Telemarket Rimini. That year, Patrone was 9-4 with a save and a 2.88 ERA. In 104 innings, he struck out 88 and walked 20. He tied for third in Serie A1 in wins, was 7th in ERA, 7th in strikeouts and 7th in lowest opponent OBP. He pitched for Italy in the 2003 Baseball World Cup, going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA. He threw two scoreless innings in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

In 2004, Patrone fell to 7-7, 2.89. He tied for 10th in wins but also tied for 10th in losses. He was left off Italy's roster for the 2004 Olympics.

Sandy was 7-7 with a 3.74 ERA in 2005. He tied for 7th in the league in losses and was 9th with 76 strikeouts. He was 1-0 in the 2005 European Championship for the Silver Medalists, but with a 9.53 ERA. In 2006, the 23-year-old right-hander was back in shape. He had a 8-4, 3.29 record for the Serie A1 champions, finishing 4th in the circuit in victories. In the 2006 Intercontinental Cup, Patrone was dominant, going 1-0 with a 1.15 ERA. He struck out 14 and walked only one in 15 1/3 IP. He made the tournament All-Star team, joining Adam Blackley as the pitchers chosen.

Sandy was even sharper in 2007, with a record of 8-3, 1.91. In 84 2/3 innings, he gave up 70 hits (only one homer) and 25 walks while whiffing 87. He was 4th in ERA, tied Javier J, Ortiz for second in wins (behind Jesus Matos) and was 3rd in strikeouts. In the 2007 European Cup, Patrone was 1-0 with a 5.14 ERA. He had a 1.93 ERA in the 2007 European Championship, taking a no-decision against France. He struggled in the 2007 Baseball World Cup, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs in 2 1/3 IP against Panama, losing to Rafael Medina. He gave up 2 runs in 3 1/3 IP in relief against Japan. Overall, he was 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA in the event, third-worst on Italy in ERA.

In July 2014, Patrone tested positive for a banned substance from a sample taken during the 2014 European Cup; he attributed it to medication he was taking for an injury.
