Sam Tibbits caught for the Australian national team.

He debuted in the Australian Baseball League in 1997-1998, hitting a solid .289/.365/.533 in 17 games for the Adelaide Giants as a backup to Dave Steed. He hit .268/.348/.537 with 5 homers in 82 at-bats in 1998-1999 but was only 1 for 5 for South Australia in the International Baseball League of Australia when it replaced for the ABL in 1999-2000.

Despite being out of Australia's top loop at the time, Tibbits helped Australia win the 2003 Oceania Championship for a spot in the 2004 Olympics. He hit .444/.438/.704 with 11 RBI in five games for South Australia in the 2004 Claxton Shield. He finished third in average (behind Brett Roneberg and Ben Wigmore), tied Gavin Fingleson for the lead with 12 hits, was second in slugging and was second in RBI (one behind former MLB All-Star Dave Nilsson). He was the second-team All-Star DH, behind Nilsson.

He was a late withdrawal for the 2005 Claxton Shield and hit .273/.304/.364 in 2006 to put his career batting line in Australia's top circuits at .298/?/.530 with 36 RBI in 62 games.
