Utility player Sam Nattile was the Boston Red Sox sixth round pick in the 1982 amateur draft, having been taken a couple picks ahead of infielder Chris Pittaro. He was signed by scout George Digby.

He began his career with a .313/.352/.524 line with 12 home runs and 57 RBI in 72 games for the Elmira Pioneers in 1982 and followed that by hitting .285/.354/.519 with 21 home runs and 80 RBI in 122 games for the Winston-Salem Red Sox. In 1984, he batted .315/.371/.473 with 10 home runs and 78 RBI in 119 games for the New Britain Red Sox. After climbing one level each year since 1982, Nattile reached Triple-A in 1985, hitting .230/.277/.356 with seven home runs and 34 RBI in 85 games for the Pawtucket Red Sox. Sent back to New Britain for 1986, Nattile batted .266/.327/.412 with eight home runs and 36 RBI in his final season.

Overall, he batted .285/.341/.464 with 58 home runs and 285 RBI in 490 games.
