Biographical Information[edit]

Sam Calderone's major league career consisted of parts of three seasons in the 1950s. After two looks with the New York Giants in 1950 and 1953, it ended with a brief spell with the Milwaukee Braves in 1954, the team of Eddie Mathews, Warren Spahn and Joe Adcock. Calderone played 22 games in Milwaukee, hitting .379 (11-for-29). A catcher, his path was blocked by Del Crandall and he never returned to the majors. In his autobiography, Ed Mickelson describes an Opening Day with the Portland Beavers. It was a doubleheader, 9 innings for the first game, then 17 innings for the night cap. Sam Calderone ended up catching all 26 innings.

Calderone missed the 1951 and 1952 seasons due to military service during the Korean War. He later managed the 1960 Quincy Giants. He died in 2006, with his obituary stating he had battled Parkinson's disease.
