Sam Barry was the head coach of the University of Iowa in 1923-1924 and the University of Southern California baseball team from 1929 to 1942. He was co-coach, with Rod Dedeaux, from 1946 to 1950. During his time at USC, he was head coach of the baseball and basketball teams and an assistant coach in football.
From the time he left the Navy in 1945 until his death, Dedeaux would coach baseball until the end of basketball season then he would hand the reigns to Barry. Under this arrangement, they shared the 1948 NCAA title.
Sam Barry was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978.
