Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Sal Zunno played in the minor leagues from 1945 to 1953. The speedster stole 34 bases for the Bristol Twins in his second campaign, while batting .337/.433/.404 with 62 walks (to 26 strikeouts) and 99 runs scored in 99 games; he was second in the Appalachian League in steals, behind Orbie Brewer's 51. The next year, 1947, he hit .321/.446/.419 with 70 steals, 107 walks (to 88 Ks) and 133 runs in 136 games for the New Bern Bears. He led the Coastal Plain League in stolen bases and runs, and was second in walks, behind Kenneth Andrews's 118. He was also second in the league in strikeouts. He stole 42 bases for the Concord Nationals in 1949 to lead the North Carolina State League, had a Big State League-leading 17 triples for the Temple Eagles in 1951 and had a final .300 campaign in 1952, when he hit exactly that for Temple. He stole at least 170 bases in his career.
