Biographical Information[edit]
Said Gutierrez has played over 15 seasons in the minors.
Gutierrez played one game for the 1997 Leones de Yucatán and did not bat. In 1998, he hit .253/.337/.319 for the AZL Padres and only threw out 13% of runners who tried to steal. He showed improvement in 1999 with the AZL Padres (6 for 19, HR, 2 BB, Opp. SB 4-9) and the Idaho Falls Braves (.310/.355/.402 in 26 G, Opp. SB 21-40). In 2000, he appeared for the Idaho Falls Braves (.220/.328/.240 in 17 G) and the Fort Wayne Wizards (.189/.231/.297 in 11 G). Moving to the Toronto Blue Jays chain for 2001, he struggled with the Charleston AlleyCats (2 for 28, 2 BB) and Auburn Doubledays (.214/.273/.328 in 41 G).
Returning to Mexico, he was a part-time catcher for the Leones in 2002 (.258/.313/.365), 2003 (.224/.271/.329), 2004 (.225/.291/.305), 2005 (.234/.294/.394) and 2006 (.247/.328/.383), often seeing the most action of a group of backstops Yucatán employed. In 2007, he became more of an everyday starter, hitting .311/.366/.458 with 20 doubles in 91 games and throwing out 43% of attempted base-thieves. In the 2008 Caribbean Series, he split catching for the Yaquis de Obregón with Iker Franco and went 1 for 10. He had a solid season for the 2008 Leones (.320/.376/.549, 11 HR in 206 AB; 46% CS).
The veteran's offensive numbers fell in 2009 (.288/.339/.419) while he caught 41% of those who tried to steal; he again was playing almost every day. In 2010, he hit .278/.350/.458 with 13 HR and 55 RBI in 78 G, while gunning down 47% of base thieves. In 2011, he batted .267/.347/.424, fielding .995 and caught 42% of stealers. He was 3 for 13 with a walk for the 2012 Leones, presumably limited by injury. He hit .270/.329/.407 in 2013, back in a part-time role.
