Ryo Asai had played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years.
Asai was drafted by the Hanshin Tigers in the first round of the 2001 NPB draft, and he hit .203/.242/.237 in 32 games in 2002. He recorded a .235/.257/.324 batting line in 2003, then he hit .250/.250/.375 in 2005. Asai crushed 2 homers with a .268/.305/.411 batting line in 2006, and he hit .211/.423/.316 in 12 games for the Waikiki Beach Boys in the winter. He only got 8 at-bats in the major league in 2007, then he went 12-for-48 in 2008. Asai blasted a career-high 4 homers with a .313/.340/.500 batting line in 2009, and he played 85 games with a solid .297/.352/.412 batting line and 3 homers in 2010. It was the closest he came to regular action but he only had 166 plate appearances, backing up Matt Murton in center. However, Asai slumped to .138/.219/.200 in 2011, and he batted .211/.235/.250 in 62 games in 2012. He recorded a .220/.264/.300 batting line in 2013, then he announced his retirement.
Overall, Asai hit .249/.286/.350 with 171 hits and 12 homers over 688 PA and 486 games in 11 seasons in NPB.
