Biographical Information[edit]

Ryan Tuntland played college ball at Oakton Community College and West Virginia University. The San Francisco Giants drafted Tuntland in the 29th round of the 2013 amateur draft and he played in their minor league system for two years. In those two seasons he played 108 games with a batting line of .227/.345/.338. The Giants released him during spring training in 2015 and he played briefly with the Schaumburg Boomers of the independent Frontier League. He retired as a player after that season and returned to West Virginia to complete his degree in multidisciplinary studies.

Tuntland began his coaching career as a student assistant with the Mountaineers during the 2016 season. After graduation he was promoted to Director of Player Development for the 2017 season. In this role Tuntland worked with players on and off the field on their development in academics, nutrition, strength and conditioning, sleep, daily routines, and mental focus. He gained additional coaching experience in the the summer of 2016 as an assistant coach for the Woodland Strykers of the Texas Collegiate League. Tuntland left West Virginia for a brief role as a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros in the summer of 2017. This only lasted a couple of months before he accepted an assistant coaching role at Oakton Community College where he stayed until January 2020. While at Oakton, the Owls won the NJCAA Division III championship. In 2020 Tuntland moved on to Ohio University as their Director of Hitting Development.

In 2021 the Texas Rangers hired Tuntland as a hitting coach for the ACL Rangers. After the season he served as the Surprise Saguaros hitting coach in the Arizona Fall League. He was hitting coach of the Hickory Crawdads in 2022 and Frisco RoughRiders in 2023. Under Tuntland, the RoughRiders set franchise records with 680 walks and a .355 team on-base percentage. The 680 walks as a team were the most in all of Double-A. Tuntland returned to Frisco in 2024.
