Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Ryan Thompson made his major league debut for the Tampa Bay Rays on Opening Day, July 24, 2020, pitching two scoreless innings in relief of Charlie Morton against the Toronto Blue Jays.

A sidearm thrower, Thompson was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 23rd round of the 2014 amateur draft out of Campbell University. As is typical of players drafted in these rounds, it took him a while to reach the majors, and by that time he had changed organizations, having been picked by the Rays in the minor league phase of the 2018 Rule V Draft. He had missed all of the 2018 season to Tommy John surgery and pitched only 16 times in 2019, going 1-1, 2.70 between the Charlotte Stone Crabs and Montgomery Biscuits. He had actually pitched a few times in AAA before his injury, with the Fresno Grizzlies in 2017.
