Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Ryan Kelly was a 26th round choice by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2006 amateur draft out of Hilton Head Island High School. He began his pro career the following summer with the GCL Pirates, going 1-0 with a 6.19 ERA in 5 games. In 2008, he had an ERA over 6.00 for the second straight year - 6.75 in 8 games for the State College Spikes in the New York-Penn League. In 2009, he was moved to the bullpen and pitched a lot better for the West Virginia Power, with a record of 3-2, 4.30 and 6 saves in 30 games. More importantly, his K/W ratio was an outstanding 67/9 in 69 innings. He was back with West Virginia in 2010 and had a similar season - 2-3, 4.20, 4 saves and 75 strikeouts in as many innings, with 19 walks. Now considered a serious prospect, he changed teams twice over the winter, first going to the Oakland Athletics for Corey Wimberly in December, then being traded to the Texas Rangers in return for P Guillermo Moscoso in early January.

2011 saw Kelly with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the Carolina League. His ERA went down for the 4th straight year, settling at 3.95 in 40 games and 82 innings, with a record of 3-6, 9 saves and 64 Ks. He was traded for a third time in a year on December 21st, this time to the San Diego Padres in return for C Luis Martinez, who had made his major league debut the previous season.

Kelly made his major league debut with the Atlanta Braves on June 30, 2015, but he struggled at the major league level that season, putting up an ERA of 7.02 in 17 games in relief. He was with the Braves in spring training in 2016, but only briefly, as he was released on March 5th before he even got into a game.
