Rusty Piggott was a minor league player for three years.

The New York Yankees took Piggott in the 29th round of the 1979 amateur draft but he did not sign. In 1980, he won All-American honors as the top shortstop in NCAA Division II. The Chicago Cubs chose him in the 23rd round of the 1980 amateur draft. Piggott hit .314/.373/.461 in his pro debut with the Geneva Cubs. He led the New York-Penn League in hits (85) and was third in average, but failed to win All-Star honors at 2B. In 1981, he put up a .264/.320/.371 line for the Quad Cities Cubs. He led Midwest League second basemen with 400 assists but also with 32 errors. He ended his career with the 1982 Salinas Spurs, batting .261/.322/.351.
