Biographical Information[edit]
Georgia native Russ Lyon spent five active seasons in professional baseball from 1937 to 1945. The tall catcher spent seven games in the Major Leagues with the Cleveland Indians from April 21 to May 27, 1944. He had eleven at-bats and two base-hits for a .182 batting average.
His minor league career shows he spent five seasons on the farm - in 1937, 1938 and 1939, then 1944 and 1945 after a four-year hiatus. He appeared in 319 games and hit at a .307 clip. He was with the Indianapolis Indians of the American Association in 1944, hitting .353 in 185 at-bats in 64 games.
Lyons was also a Georgia Tech football player and a professional basketball player, he became a master mechanic for Bigelow Sanford Company at the Rocky River Plant. He was active in civic affairs in Calhoun Falls, SC, where he lived. Russell Mayo Lyon died suddenly at the age of 62.
