Biographical Information[edit]
Ruly Carpenter, whose family made their fortune with DuPont Chemicals, was a Yale-educated businessman who inherited the presidency of the Philadelphia Phillies upon the resignation of the father, Bob Carpenter, in 1972.
Carpenter oversaw four division titles and their first World Series title during his eight years as president and owner. The Carpenters sold the club to Bill Giles in 1981, thus ending a 38-year relationship with the club.
Carpenter was assistant coach for the University of Delaware in 1963 while doing undergrad work in business administration. He later served on the school's board of trustees.
