Biographical Information[edit]

Right-hander Roy Wright was signed as an amateur free agent by the St. Louis Cardinals before the 1953 season. He was assigned to the St. Joseph Cardinals of the Western Association with just enough time to appear in one game, pitching two innings and picking up his first professional loss, before being inducted into the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

Wright spent four years in the service as a flight scheduling clerk in the Air Force and pitched his Landstuhl (Germany) Raiders team to the 1955 championship of a world-wide military tournament in Greenville, SC. During his stay in the service, the Cardinals sent him to the New York Giants. On September 30, 1956 Wright made his major league debut against the Philadelphia Phillies. Roy allowed 5 runs and 8 hits and was charged with the loss in what would turn out to be his only appearance in the Show.

Roy continued his pro career in the minor leagues for the next three seasons (1957-1959) and had his only season at .500 or better with the Springfield Giants of the Eastern League in 1958, going 9-9 with a 3.88 ERA, pitching 123 innings. Roy was with the Phoenix Giants of the Pacific Coast League and the Corpus Christi Giants of the Texas League in 1959, falling to a 2-9 record. Wright ended his pro career at this time with a four-year minor league record of 21-30 and a 4.57 ERA while appearing in 122 games.

Wright worked for 20 years as a warehouseman for Texaco Incorporated in Chattanooga, TN. From 1980 until his retirement in Chickamauga, Georgia, in 1993, he was a bucket truck operator for North Georgia Electric. He died in Chickamauga in 2018 aged 84.
