Biographical Information[edit]

"Since St. Louis had secured an option to buy a promising shortstop named Roy Corhan from San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League, they offered to sell (Rogers) Hornsby to Class A Little Rock . . . But Little Rock passed on the deal . . ." - from a biography of Rogers Hornsby [1]

Roy "Irish" Corhan had two seasons in the majors and 13 in the minors. All his minor league time was spent in two leagues, the Western League and the Pacific Coast League.

Roy was born in Indianapolis, IN, but was playing for the Pueblo Indians of Pueblo, CO at age 19. He stayed with the Indians for three years, and then went to the St. Joseph Drummers of the same league. His batting average went up each year as he matured.

He played major league ball for the Chicago White Sox in 1911, getting into 43 games at age 23, and playing almost exclusively shortstop. Lee Tannehill was the regular shortstop for the team that year.

Roy went back into the minors for four seasons, all with the San Francisco Seals, peaking with a .293 batting average in 1914, third on the team. He came back to the big leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1916, appearing in 92 games and getting 322 plate appearances. He is listed as the regular shortstop for the team, playing alongside the rookie third baseman, a youngster named Rogers Hornsby. The following year, Hornsby took over at shortstop and led the league in slugging percentage.

Roy went back to San Francisco for several more years, most, notably appearing in 210 games in 1917.
