Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Ronald Bolanos was signed by the San Diego Padres on August 4, 2016 after defecting from Cuba at the 2014 U18 Pan-American Championship as a member of the Cuban junior national team. He had briefly played for Mayabeque of the Serie Nacional before that.

He began his pro career in 2017 with the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Midwest League, going 5-2, 4.41 in 16 games, mainly as a starter. In 2018, he was 6-9, 5.11 for the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League. He followed that with a very strong season in 2019, that saw him make his major league debut with the Padres at the end of the year. He started off with Lake Elsinore where he was 5-2, 2.85 in 10 starts. Promoted to the Amarillo Sod Poodles of the AA Texas League, he had more success, going 8-5, 4.23 to finish a combined 13-7, 3,66 in 25 games (23 starts) with 142 strikeouts in 130 1/3 innings. He was given a look at the major league level that September, making his debut on September 3rd. In 5 games, including 3 starts, he went 0-2, 5.95.

On July 16, 2020, he was included in the first trade involving players following the resumption of training camps after the three-month interruption caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. Alongside OF Franchy Cordero, he was sent to the Kansas City Royals in return for LhP Tim Hill.
