Biographical Information[edit]

Román Vilchez started at short for the Venezuelan national team that won Silver in the 1953 Amateur World Series; Luis Aparicio would go on to bigger fame among the team's shortstops. Vilchez won Gold in the 1954 Central American and Caribbean Games, the first Venezuelan baseball team to win that honor. He turned pro that winter, but hit only .224/?/.239 for the Leones del Caracas. In 1955, he had his only season in the US, fielding .942 for both the Pine Bluff Judges/Meridian Millers (.236/.324/.287 in 51 G, 25 R) and Thetford Mines Miners (.174/.268/.232 in 33 G). He fell to .177/?/.188 for Caracas in 1955-1956 and was 1 for 25 with a double for them the next winter to end his career.
