Biographical Information[edit]

Roger Williams played briefly in the minors and was later elected to Congress.

After attending Texas Christian University (where his teammates included future big leaguer Jeff Newman), Williams was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 25th round of the 1971 amateur draft. Primarily playing outfield, he hit .318 in 69 games for the Wytheville Braves that summer. After spending the next two years with the Greenwood Braves, his playing career ended due to an injury. He returned to his alma mater as TCU's head coach in 1976, leading the team to a 22-24 record in his lone season at the helm.

Williams later went into politics and served as Secretary of State of Texas from 2005 to 2007. He was voted into Congress in 2012 as a Republican from Texas and reelected two years later.
