Biographical Information

Robert Gibson briefly played major league baseball and later was a longtime federal judge.

Gibson made his major league debut with the Chicago Orphans on June 4th, 1890, as the starting pitcher against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, going the distance and taking the win. That was his only appearance for Chicago, and he moved on to join Pittsburgh for the rest of the year. He lost all three of his starts for the Alleghenys and also made two appearances for the club in the outfield. Overall, he was 1-3 with a 9.86 ERA in what would be his only big league season, while going 3-for-17 at the plate. He played a couple more years in the minors.

After his baseball days, Gibson became an attorney. He served as a federal judge from 1922 until his death in 1949. His body was laid to rest in Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
