Rick Johnston has been involved in Canadian baseball for decades. He was a member of Team Canada for the 1985 Intercontinental Cup, 1987 Pan American Games, 1987 Intercontinental Cup, 1988 Olympics and 1991 Pan American Games. Johnson has coached and managed in France and for the University of Toronto. He scouted for the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Johnston managed for five years in the Intercounty Baseball League, being named Manager of the Year three times. He managed Karlovac to the Croatian title in both 1997 and 1999; he was instrumental in turning the club into the country's powerhouse of the era. He coached for the Croatian national team at the 2007 European Championship.
