Ricardo Montilla signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2004. He was placed on the restricted list the next year and did not make his debut for the organization until 2009. He is the older brother of Richard Montilla.
He tossed two shutout innings in the 2007 Pan American Games. In the 2007 Baseball World Cup, he tossed one inning against Italy, walking two. He also worked 2/3 of an inning versus host Taiwan, surrendering a solo homer to Chia-Hsian Hsieh. Montilla was ejected from the game, presumably for hitting a batter.
Montilla was on the preliminary roster for Panama for the 2009 World Baseball Classic but did not make the final cut. He finally made his pro debut in 2009 with the VSL Rays, allowing a hit and striking out a batter on May 24 against the VSL Mariners. After 4 games, he was 2-0 with no runs allowed and 8 strikeouts in six innings.
