Biographical Information

René Duarte caught in the Mexican League.

Duarte was a prominent amateur star for several years before turning pro. He played for the Mexican national team in the 1987 Intercontinental Cup and 1990 Goodwill Games. In the 1990 Baseball World Cup, he hit .276/.276/.310 as Mexico's main catcher, though he only fielded .889, with four errors in six games behind the dish. He batted .194/.265/.419 with 7 RBI in nine games in the 1991 Intercontinental Cup, fielding much better (27 PO, 14 A, CS 39%). He tied for 4th in the event with two homers, tying Carlos Manriquez for the team lead. He also played in the 1991 Pan American Games.

He turned pro in 1993 with the Petroleros de Minatitlan, hitting .236/.295/.297 in 86 games. In 1994, he batted .234/.273/.304 for the Petroleros, fielding .974. He posted a .264/.308/.330 batting line in '95, with only 8 walks. In 1996, he played for Minatitlan and the Olmecas de Tabasco, hitting a combined .282/.346/.367 for his best LMB campaign on offense. He wound up in 1997 with Tabasco and the Piratas de Campeche, hitting .243/.278/.284. In five LMB campaigns, he had hit .250/.296/.315 with 105 runs and 101 RBI in 388 games.

He managed the Dorados de Chihuahua for part of 2017.
