The older brother of big leaguer Jeffrey Hammonds, outfielder Reggie Hammonds was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 14th round of the 1983 amateur draft and the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 24th round of the 1984 amateur draft. He played three seasons in their organization but never reached the majors. He debuted with the 1984 GCL Pirates, hitting .235/.289/.342 with 8 steals in 11 attempts in 44 games. He did not make an error in the field. In 1985, Hammonds played for the Macon Pirates (.318/~.377/.393 in 51 games, leading the team in average) and the Prince William Pirates (.287/~.351/.448 in 68 games). With Prince William, he was second on the team in average behind Barry Bonds, ahead of Bobby Bonilla. Hammonds struggled in 1986, though, with the AA Nashua Pirates, only hitting .198/~.264/.269 in 69 games. He outhit outfield mate and future major leaguer Matias Carrillo.
