Red Springs, NC
Red Springs is located in southern North Carolina, 20 miles southwest of Fayetteville, NC.
With a population around 4,000 at the time, it was the smallest town in the U.S. to host an affiliated baseball team when the Red Springs Twins played here in 1969. Two or three decades earlier, a town that size hosting a professional baseball team would have been relatively common (such as when Red Springs had a team in the short-lived Tobacco State League), but it had become something completely out of the ordinary by the late 1960s, and the team received a lot of coverage as a result. While the team drew creditable crowds, players complained about the lack of entertainment options in the small town, and the team moved after its only season.
