Red Connally
John M. Connally
(Red)
- Bats Both, Throws Unknown
Biographical Information[edit]
Red Connally, also known as Connolly, played two games for the St. Louis Maroons in 1886. He was hitless in seven at bats. The death date traditionally associated to Connolly's name in baseball records, March 2, 1896, actually belongs to John Connell, a former umpire who was umpiring in Kansas City when Red made his brief appearance in the National League. Red was likely an amateur player from St. Louis, but nothing else is known about him at this time.
Indeed, it's unlikely that his first name was John, as a contemporary newspaper, the Decatur Daily Republican carried a note that "Dave Connelly, who played briefly with Decatur in June of 1886 is now playing with the St. Louis big league club." However, it has so far proved impossible to identify the person who was that "Dave Connelly", even using a number of possible spellings of his last name.
