Biographical Information

David "Red" Barron played for the 1929 Boston Braves. He was nearly 30 years old at the time, having attended Georgia Institute of Technology from 1919-1922, and played in the minors for several years prior to his major league debut. Barron was a three-sport star at Georgia Tech, winning letters in baseball, football and track, and is a member of the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame. At age 30, Barron hit .346 for the Atlanta Crackers, where future Hall of Fame teammate Luke Appling hit .326.

After baseball, he became an educator, serving as head of a vocational school in Georgia. A friend of Governor Eugene Talmadge, he was appointed to a senior position at Georgia Tech in a political move but the appointment was rescinded after student demonstrations without Barron ever having accepted it. Barron's brother, Carter, was also a sports star at GT and became a prominent citizen. Source: The Story of Georgia Tech.
