Reading Marines

From BR Bullpen

In 1920 the Reading Coal Barons of the International League changed their name to the Reading Marines. The team from Reading, PA improved from last to 5th in the 8-team league with a 65-85 record. OF-2B John Hummel took over the managerial duties and helped his team with a .320 average at the plate. The top hitter in 1919, Mike Konnick, moved from first base to catcher and had another fine year - .336, 94 runs and a .575 slugging percentage (33 doubles, 11 triples and 22 homers). The move to catcher enabled Frank Brower to move into regular duty at first. Brower hit .388, scored 96 runs and slugged .684, perhaps the top mark in the league (he hit 31 doubles, 13 triples and 22 homers, nearly identical with Konnick's power stats). The two men tied for the IL lead in home runs. OF Joe Burns hit .326, stole 29 bases, hit 35 doubles and scored 122 runs. Dean Barnhardt (14-12, 4.05) and Ross Swartz (8-11, 3.85) were the aces. The team changed names again in 1921, becoming the Reading Aces.
