Biographical Information[edit]

Ray Stokes played three seasons in the minor leagues.

In college at California State University, East Bay, Stokes starred in NCAA Division III. As a junior, he hit .400, stole 29 bases and scored 55 runs. He was second in Division III in runs, set a school record for steals in a season and was named NCAA Division III All-West Region first team. He also was named the Player of the Year for All-Independent Baseball by the Association of Division III Independents. His 59 career steals also set a school record. The San Diego Padres took him in the 16th round of the 2006 amateur draft after he was scouted by Rich Bordi.

The small outfielder split 2006 between the AZL Padres (.254/.403/.288 in 21 G) and Eugene Emeralds (.186/.239/.209 in 11 G), only going 3-for-5 in steals. In 2007, he batted .255/.468/.382 for Eugene and stole 9 bases in 12 tries in 18 games. A utility infielder, he also went 0 for 3 for the Fort Wayne Wizards. The OBP machine was 5 for 14 with 5 walks for Fort Wayne in 2008 but that was it for his minor league career despite a career .399 OBP.

Stokes signed with the Heidenheim Heideköpfe of Germany for 2009. He debuted in the Bundesliga on April 5th, going 2 for 3 in both halves of the Opening Day doubleheader. He also drew 3 walks, stole 7 bases in 7 tries, scored 3 and drove in one while handling 11 chances error-free at second base in a great start.
