Biographical Information[edit]

Ray Soff pitched two seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals and was in the minors for 14 years. With the Cards, his ERA in his first season, 1986, was 3.29 in 30 appearances. He was the same age as teammate Willie McGee.

In 1985 he had pitched with the Arkansas Travelers, posting an ERA of 1.38, and then in 1986 in the minors he had an ERA of 1.55 split between two teams. He came up to the majors in July of that year. He was also with the Cardinals at the start of the 1987 season, but was sent down to the minors at the end of May, thus missing out on their run to the 1987 World Series.

After his major league time, he spent parts of three seasons with the Tidewater Tides in the New York Mets organization, pitching reasonably well,

The only other major leaguer whose name starts "Sof" has been Rick Sofield.

He is one of six major leaguers (through 2019) born in Adrian, MI. One of the others was pitcher Mike Marshall, who was in the big leagues a few years before Ray.
